The Cagsawa Ruins is situated in Daraga, Albay it has its tragic story when the Mayon volcano erupted and eventually become one of the top tourist destination in Bicol because of its proximity to the volcano. Indeed, you can capture a picturesque landscape of Mayon. Locals say that it was a beautiful disaster.
Imagine how high the bell tower and you are stepping on the church with dead people below.
The only downside for a time is when the clouds cover the crater of the volcano where you need to wait for half an hour to hours but will just show up for 5-10 minutes and the clouds will cover it again.
I would suggest that once the crater show up, just enjoy the moment and maybe a two-three pictures will do for your postcard.
There is a minimal entrance fee of Php 20.00/adults and Php 10.00/child below 7 years old. A parking fee of Php 30.00 and Php 20.00 for cars and motorcycle/tricycle respectively.
From the entrance, you will be welcomed by a statue of Jesus Christ and a beautiful backdrop of the Ruins and Mayon.
There are food stalls and souvenir shops inside and outside the area where you can eat and buy a pasalubong to your loved ones. There are seats around while you can just chill and enjoy the view.
Do not forget to try their best selling ice cream with different levels of spicyness and flavor (level 1 – mango, level 2 – chocolate/ube and level 3 – chili flavor) since I can’t tolerate food that is spicy I only tried the level 1 – mango flavor. The spicyness can only be felt after the taste. I tried before the level 3 when I had my first visit and to be honest, the moment I tasted it I gave up and threw the ice cream. It cost Php 50.00 regardless of the flavors and level of spicyness. If you don’t like to try their ice cream you can buy a fruit shakes. Some stores offers a refreshments and home cooked-meals if you are hunger.
There are also some activities you can try, they offer an ATV ride which cost about Php 3,000. There are some locals who will offer to take good pictures for you with a minimal fee (Php 50.00 I guess) surprisingly they are good at photography. But if you prefer to enjoy the view, you can skip the aforementioned activities.
